Crop focus

SeedNL aims to improve farmer access to quality seed. It focuses in particular on access to vegetable and potato seed. Both the Dutch vegetable and potato seed sectors are global frontrunners. Dutch seed companies produce 33% of quality vegetable seed worldwide. Moreover, the Netherlands is the number one producer of potato seed in the world.

  • Vegetables

Vegetables are a crucial component of healthy diets. Cultivation contributes to nutrition security directly through consumption and/or indirectly through an increased income from market sales. While many farmers grow and sell staple crops, few farmers grow and sell vegetables. These are more advanced farmers as commercial vegetables tend to require a higher investment and additional skills. Our aim is to enable more farmers to grow, consume and sell vegetables.

  • Potato

Potato may be the staple of the future. In comparison to maize, rice and wheat, the crop yields the highest number of calories per hectare using the lowest amount of water. Meanwhile, limited access to quality potato seed remains the main challenge for potato farmers depressing the quality and quantity of their harvest. Our aim is to improve access to high-quality potato seed in Low- and Middle Income countries.
