Developing a Seed Road Map & Providing Variety Testing Support for Indonesia

Indonesia aims to strengthen its horticulture and become a regional hub for seed breeding and production. The “Developing a Seed Road Map & Providing Variety Testing Support for Indonesia” project supports that ambition from January 2026 to June 2027 by co-developing a national seed sector road map and testing promising vegetable and potato varieties in key locations.

Partners

The project brings together a variety of stakeholders from both Indonesia and the Netherlands. It is implemented by SeedNL and Wageningen Social and Economic Research, funded through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). The project intends to establish a technical working group with Indonesian partners, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Coordinating Ministry of Food Affairs, and Quarantine Authority. Furthermore, the project will partner with Dutch companies intenting to improve market access, and start variety testing, promotion, and sales.

Activities & Outcomes

The project will focus its efforts in three key areas:

  1. Establishment of joint Indonesia-Netherlands Working Group on Seed Sector Development
Consisting of Indonesian and Dutch partners, this group would meet regularly, with a focus on regulatory topics and global seed sector developments. The project seeks to further support this working group by providing discussion papers and organising field visits.

  2. Development of an Indonesian Seed Sector Roadmap
This road map intends to have a 10-year vision for the development of the Indonesian seed sector, and have multiple implementation pathways.

  3. Variety trials of Dutch varieties in Indonesia
A minimum of 20 variety trials for Dutch vegetable and potato varieties are intent to take place under the project in Northern Sumatra and Java.
